Opioids

Opioid drugs are central nervous system depressants that come in three types: natural (morphine, codeine), semi-synthetic (heroin, Oxycontin), and synthetic (Demerol, methadone). They may come in tablet, capsule, liquid, syrup, or powder.

Brand Names:  Oxycontin, Dilaudid, Perocet, Hydromorphone, Morphine, Methadone, Codeine, Demerol

Method of use:  Heroin can be sniffed, smoked, or swallowed and can be injected intravenously, under the skin, or into the muscle.

Prescription opioids can be chewed or crushed and swallowed, injected or sniffed.

Effects of Use:

• Euphoria (a rush of pleasurable feelings)
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Anxiety
• Suppressions of pain (physical and emotional)
• Drowsiness
• Rapid or irregular heartbeat
• Impaired concentration
• Lethargy
• Confusion
• Muscle relaxation
• Lower Blood Pressure, Lower Heart and Respiratory rate

Signs of Use:

• Moodiness or unexplained euphoria
• Excessive sweating or chills
• Runny nose and eyes
• Insomnia
• Pin point pupils
• Slurred speech
